Rooibos, Red Tea 80g

Rooibos tea, also known as red bush tea or simply "red tea", is a tea made from the leaves of the Aspalathus linearis plant, native to South Africa. It has gained popularity worldwide due to its unique flavour profile and numerous health benefits.

Flavour Profile

Naturally sweet and nutty flavour with hints of caramel and vanilla. Some say it has a mild spicy flavour.

Benefits

Rooibos tea is rich in antioxidants, has anti-inflammatory properties and has been traditionally consumed to soothe digestive discomfort and promote gastrointestinal health. 

Studies have shown that Rooibos tea may help lower blood pressure and improve cholesterol levels, promoting a healthy heart. The high levels of vitamin C in Rooibos tea may help strengthen your immune system and protect against common illnesses. 

It is also caffeine-free!

Preparation

Rooibos tea is most commonly enjoyed as a hot beverage, it can also be brewed hot before being chilled in the fridge and consumed as an iced tea.

  1. Add one teaspoon per cup
  2. Pour freshly boiled water over the tea leaves
  3. Allow to steep for 5-7 minutes for optimal flavour
    (taste every 30 seconds after the first 5 minutes to avoid bitterness)
  4. Strain your tea and Enjoy!
  5. Sweeten with honey, add milk or preferred sweetener for taste.

Traditional Method:

  1. Start by bringing water to a boil in a large saucepan.
  2. Add one teaspoon of loose leaf tea for every cup of water. (or 250ml)
  3. Turn the stove to medium low heat and simmer for 30 minutes.
  4. Strain the tea leaves into a mug using a fine mesh strainer.
  5. Serve with a splash of milk and enjoy!

ICED TEA TIPS: Try flavouring your iced tea with citrus fruits or berries. Always infuse with hot water and allow to cool before serving as in iced tea as tea leaves will not infuse properly in cold water.

No known allergens, trace elements may be present due to farming practices.

In rare cases, rooibos consumption may lead to liver enzyme elevation and potential hepatotoxicity, especially in individuals with pre-existing liver conditions. 

Rooibos may interact with medications like ACE inhibitors and those metabolized by the liver, potentially affecting their efficacy or side effects.  Antioxidants in tea leaves may interact with chemotherapy treatments, consult with your doctor to be sure it's safe.

If you have a history of allergies or sensitivities to other plants in the Malvaceae family, consult a doctor before trying rooibos.
