Shrunken Head (Authentic replica)

$60.00
SKU: CURIOS-SHRNKHEAD-CORD

Authentic replica Shrunken Heads - also known as "Trade Heads"

Made in Ecuador by the Jivaro people. Crafted from "bush meat" - typically whatever the village has been using for food. Most of these shrunken heads are made of pig, goat or alpaca with animal hair (usually goat or alpaca).

Each tsantsa shrunken head is hand crafted in the traditional method by an indigenous artist and each is its own original masterpiece, no two are exactly alike. Details may vary slightly but not significantly.

A shrunken head, also known as tsantsas, is a severed and specially prepared human head that is used for trophy, ritual, or trade purposes.

The practice of preparing shrunken heads originally had religious significance; shrinking the head of an enemy was believed to harness the spirit of that enemy and compel him to serve the shrinker. It was said to prevent the soul from avenging his death.

Presentation:

Our Shrunken Heads are approximately 7-8cm x 6-7cm wide (heads)

We have brushed their hair and added cord for hanging, some have also had some cording stitched through their mouth - if you'd like to add more detail to yours, a sturdy sewing needle works quite well!

We also have a limited number available with a stand, they are not "fixed" to their stands so you will be able to take them off/on (we've placed some kitchen paper towel inside for stability without causing damage.

We will also have some higher quality heads in glass domes shortly.
